I didn't used to think this before, and some people have speculated this. But there was a big clue that Sawyer didn't know who they are.

Why is that a clue?

1. Sawyer not knowing a hot girl out of 40 survivors is unlikely.

2. He is a master of the con, manipulation, and sizing up a situation.

3. Add on that she knew so much about the Pearl station.

That might explain why karl didn't want to join the beach camp.

I was looking for a thread like this. I'm surprised it took this long for it to pop up. I think we are supposed to really wonder about Paulo and Nikki now. The look on Paulo's face after Sawyer asked who he was said it all. But why does Sawyer not recognize him while everyone else does? It must have something to do with Sawyer being gone at a particular time (like when the sky turned purple).

I agree... Is what's going on with Desmond happening at a higher level? Do they keep going back to re-write time? The 815 plane crashes and Paulo and Nikki do not survive the crash and are killed. Desmond turns the failsafe key, the hatch implodes, sky turns purple (jack, kate & sawyer are not at the beach), etc... When Desmond wakes up and returns to the beach Paulo and Nikki are there as if they always survived the original crash (was time re-written?). This would seem normal to those on the beach but, Sawyer was on the other side of the island when the failsafe key was turned and was not impacted by this thus, noticing someone different upon his return to the beach.

Or they could have just needed some new actors to fill in some parts to the plot of the show. Sawyer's remark could have been directed at the audience by saying we realize the fans know Nikki and Paolo were not in the first couple seasons, but we needed to replace some actors, so we wrote them in as if they were. So if the fans don't mind, let's move forward from here with them in the story.

Although they are two very shady character, and I do think at some point they will be shown doing something not so honest... I do not believe they are plants. I think that line was mainly in there as a shout out to all the haters of them.

Agree; I was trying to say same thing, but your point is better.

Personally, I took Sawyer's comment as a wink and a nod to the audience.

Nikki and Paolo were irrelevant to the story line prior to the hatch implosion, and the writers have been slowly writing them into relevancy since then. While they are doing the best they can to gradually make two extras into main characters, it's not an easy task to fold two new characters into an existing story line and not have it feel a little awkward.

So Sawyer asking who the heck they are is a way of acknowledging that their emergence as relevant characters was not seamless and smooth.
