Carlos Castaneda
I've read about 9 of Castaneda's books over the years and was pretty captivated with the first three books, The Teachings of Don Juan, a Separate Reality and Journey to Ixlan. I don't know if they are based on real experiences or not, or perhaps Peyote induced hallucinations, but looking into Yaqui Shamanism was interesting. I've never seen twilight the same way where dead branches turn into a living creatures, his experience of shape shifting into a Crow and a detailed description of how crows perceive, or the real power of lightning which light up totally alien landscapes.
If it wasn't true, then these are novels which paint a very detailed and organized philosophy. I sense that Castaneda's first book was about 70% true, which was based on his PHD thesis, but then this imaginary world opened up for Castaneda and he got lost in it. Even after Don Juan's passing, he was still being tutored by him, like Obi Wan to Luke Skywalker. Whether fact or fiction they had pearls of wisdom in them.
